The jubilee 50th Golden Gong, a senior tournament with a great tradition hosted by Skopje and backed by the great organization Boxing Federation of Macedonia, hosted numerous competitors from the region and Europe.
Only five days after the end of the Men’s World Championship in Belgrade, Serbia reached new medals, this time two gold (Rogić and Jovanović) and one bronze (Nazif). The selector of the men’s boxing national team of Serbia, Milan Piperski, chose a small expedition of boxers and coaches for the Golden Gong in Skopje, which represented their country in a great way.
Serbia was represented at this highly esteemed competition by three boxers: Sejdi Nazif in the category up to 63.5 kg, Igor Rogić (75 kg) and Slobodan Jovanović (86 kg), under the leadership and support of the coaches of our selection, Stojan Knezević and Marko Mijaljević.
By the will of the draw, Nazif passed without a fight to the semifinals, where he is a better representative of Ireland than him. Igor Rogić left a great impression, with three victories. He was great in his category in all three matches, beating the Ukrainian, the Albanian and in the final the best boxer Wales Croft, who was presented before the start of the tournament as a big star and the future of boxing of this island country.
Slobodan Jovanović, who was stopped by a Cuban at the World Cup in Belgrade, confirmed that he has a great future. He had a difficult task against the Moldavian in the semifinals, but he used his left hand brilliantly, and after the victory he was rewarded with a thunderous applause in the “Boris Trajkovski” hall. In the final, Jovanović fought against the high representative of Montenegro, Milorad Purić. Our national team player dominated in the first round, which was unanimously awarded to him by the judges. In the second round, the Montenegrin tried to return to the match with a lot of attacks, which Jovanović repulsed well with a great guard. In the end, Slobodan won in the second round as well, while he routinely finished the third in his favor, and the result of everything is another gold medal for Serbian boxing.
“I am just happy. Behind me is a great year, I have made a lot of progress. I brought the title to Sombor in the club Super League. He secured the vice-champion title for Partizan at the Individual Championship of Serbia. And now in Skopje, difficult rivals, in the final of the favored Welshman, I surpassed and I am carrying a medal to Serbia. I can’t wait for the debut for Crvena zvezda in the Regional League “- said Igor Rogić.
